FAQS

Frequently Asked Questions

Appraisal versus warranty:

warranty is typically offered by the seller, to repair or replace a valued jewelry item if damaged.

An appraisal is a written document by an expert appraiser, GIA Graduate Gemologist, for the purpose of obtaining insurance  in the event your item is lost or stolen.

Who should get an appraisal?

Anyone wishing to protect their fine jewelry items of value or family heirlooms.

How often should I have an appraisal updated?

In reality, only when Market conditions change significantly, when you move, or change Insurance companies. Check with your Insurance company.

How long does it take to get an appraisal?

At Jewelry Appraisers of North Carolina, we can schedule your appraisal for the same day, or within 48 hours, depending on the number of jewelry items and their complexity.

What items should I get insured?

Jewelry you consider valuable or irreplaceable, especially fine diamonds, 14 Karat gold, designer jewelry items or family heirlooms.

Who should I trust to do my appraisal?

We believe an independent appraiser is critical. A  GIA (Gemological Institute of America) Graduate Gemologist, and  member of  the National Association of Jewelry Appraisers (NAJA), or it’s equivalent, is qualified to appreciate, identify, grade, and place an appropriate value on your items.

What types of items do we appraise?

Diamonds, rings, earrings, bracelets, necklaces and more, 10K, 14K and 18K fine jewelry, platinum jewelry, fine precious gemstones, cultured pearls, fine watches, like Rolex, Cartier, or Patek Philippe, fine designers, like David Yurman, Tiffany, or John Hardy, fine Vintage jewelry items from the Art Deco, Retro, or Victorian era, Sterling silver flatware and US gold and silver coins. If you are not sure our experts will be glad to review and advise.

How much does an appraisal cost?

A written appraisal is an affordable $75 for the first item, with possible discounts for additional items.
